GGZ inGeest, a mental health care organization located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has proven to be very successful in reducing (involuntary separation). Not only the number, but also the period of time for separations have declined strongly from the moment project ‘dwang en drang (coercion and compulsion)‘ started.

The first results and best practices were documented in the book 'the first 5 minutes, halfway' in the year 2008. After the second edition was sold out, GGZ inGeest decided it was time for a thorough review. The review is documented as well and published with the appropriate title 'The first 5 minutes prolonged'. The Patient Safety Company is proud to have been involved in and to the realization of this new publication.

Best practices

This new publication starts with a brief introduction of the project and the GGZ inGeest vision regarding (onvoluntary) separations. Next to the developed best practices of the previous edition, the new book contains different and new best practices. This way the new edition strives for becoming a practical guide to physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and project managers on the topic of deployment of separations. The book focuses on obstacles and pitfalls when applying interventions. Next to that, the book points out where to focus on when using innovations and providing tips on how to handle.

Measurable successes

In 2001 GGZ inGeest started the project ‘dwang en drang‘ (coercion and compulsion). Since then, 7 of 22 separation rooms have been closed. The number of single person rooms has increased, giving clients more privacy. Employees on all closed wards received a de-escalation training. Nursing units have a more open character, and on 1 ward the nursing post has been removed completely.
