Belgian hospital purchases reporting- and learning system from TPSC

The Patient Safety Company (TPSC) has broadened its customer base in Belgium. After extended research the OLV van Lourdes Hospital Waregem has decided to increase patient safety structurally and to secure the quality of care with the Clinical Risk Management System (CRMS) of The Patient Safety Company.

In the future all incidents, adverse events and complaints, which (can) occur within the organization, will be registered systematically and analyzed carefully, after which they will be converted into improvement actions. The governing board of the hospital wants to start as soon as possible with the implementation of the CRMS.

The hospital in Waregem has signed the Contract “Quality & Patient safety” of the Belgium Federal Public Service of Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment and is therefore obliged to meet the ambitious objectives of the contract. The contract states that among other things health care institutions need to register incidents systematically by the end of 2010, analyze the basic causes, classify incidents in accordance with the WHO taxonomy and finally they need to define improvement actions in order to increase and secure the quality of care and patient safety. The hospital puts high priority on these objectives, therefore it is no surprise they have chosen for the CRMS of TPSC. With the purchased modules the hospital disposed of a very advanced and professional reporting- and learning system to work on these goals in a structural and systematic way:

TPSC Notify
This module consists of the Reporting Management System (RMS) which is the foundation of the CRMS and makes incident reporting easy accessible for employees. An additional advantage of the CRMS of TPSC is the systematic classification of incidents in accordance with the international WHO taxonomy. Because this system makes it possible to classify incidents in an automated way and to make reports, which makes the processing of the analyses much more easy and saves valuable time.

The RMS can be completed with several analysis modules. At first the members of team Patient Safety of the OLV van Lourdes Hospital Waregem will work with:

TPSC Investigate
After incidents have been reported the root cause analysis will be used to search for basic causes and the underlying reasons. Subsequently the results of these analyses can be used to execute improvement actions within the organization, in order to prevent similar events from happening in the future.

TPSC Anticipate
The TPSC Anticipate module will be used to analyze processes, to build barriers and to anticipate on errors, so that adverse events can be prevented.
